BUSON STUDIO
Derivative Work
Commercial Use Hub
Character IP licensing for the AI era — building characters meant to last 100 years.
A unified hub for the official guidelines, terms of service, and marketplaces of Shikibu World and Crypto Baby Animals, the character IP projects from BUSON.
We publish the legal framework and operating policies transparently so that NFT holders, creators, and businesses can use the characters with confidence.
Mission
Growing characters that last 100 years, together with their holders
Shikibu World and Crypto Baby Animals are not merely digital collectibles (NFTs). They are a framework that lets NFT holders launch their own derivative-work projects that commercially use the character IP.
01
Supporting individuals and small businesses
We dramatically lower the cost of obtaining commercial-use permission, transforming the structure where "character utilization is only for big companies." Just by holding an NFT, you can use the character in your own business — merchandise, social media, regional collaborations, and more.
02
Energizing local economies and creating business opportunities
As holders nationwide deploy character businesses in their respective regions, many local businesses are born from a single IP. This is the opposite approach to traditional IP models, where dissemination tends to concentrate in major cities.
03
Deterring unlawful unauthorized use; building a lawful environment
We establish a "regular route along the Guideline" rather than "anyone makes anything they want." Holders can invest in their businesses with confidence, and the character expands while preserving its brand value.
How it works
An NFT is itself the grant of "commercial-use permission for derivative works"
Conventionally, "official" character IP refers to works produced and sold by the rights holder. Fan-created derivative works are often in a gray zone, and commercial use requires a separate contract.
Traditional character IP
- ×Official = the rights holder only
- ×Derivative works are fan activity; commercial use is not allowed / gray
- ×Commercial use is an individual contract for corporate deals
- ×Deployment locations depend on the rights holder
Shikibu World / CBA
- ✓Official = the rights holder only (unchanged)
- ✓Commercial use of derivative works is pre-permitted
- ✓Holding an NFT is itself the grant of commercial-use permission
- ✓Deployment expands with every holder

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about NFT derivative works and commercial use. Click an item to expand.
What can I do if I only hold one NFT?
You can use the artwork of your owned NFT (NFT Shikibu-chan) for personal-level commercial purposes via derivative works. Specifically, you may create, publish, and sell fan art; create and sell LINE stickers; create and sell merchandise; plan and operate VTubers; create and sell 3D avatars; and use the artwork as material on websites, social media, etc. This is limited to individuals and SMEs with annual revenue under JPY 200 million. Apps, games, anime, manga, and food trucks are only available under Route 2 (50+ pieces held).
Read Guideline §1 What is a "Genre Slot"? How is it different from a "License"?
A "Genre Slot" is the unit of allowance for a Shikibu World holder with 50+ pieces to commercially use Standard Shikibu-chan. One slot is required per genre (LINE stickers, merchandise, anime/manga, etc.), and 50 pieces grants 1 slot. As you hold more pieces, you receive more slots (50=1 / 65=2 / 80=3 / 90=4 / 100=5 / +1 slot per additional 10 pieces, up to a maximum of 10 slots). It was originally called "License", but because "License" strongly suggests an officially granted right, we renamed it to "Genre Slot" to align with the (unofficial) derivative-work project positioning. The scope of rights, conditions, and operational rules are completely unchanged.
Read the terminology change notice What are the benefits of holding 50 pieces?
With 50+ pieces and a separately concluded contract, in addition to what is permitted under Route 1, you become eligible to: (1) use Standard Shikibu-chan (the general-purpose character design); (2) create and sell apps and games; (3) create and sell anime and manga; (4) develop merchandise commercially in earnest (up to 3 products per genre slot during the same period); (5) use illustration stock (up to 20 pieces per genre slot); and (6) launch a project channel on the Character DAO. Additionally, more pieces held means more genre slots (50=1 / 65=2 / 80=3 / 90=4 / 100=5 / +1 slot per additional 10 pieces, capped at 10 slots / no further increase beyond 150 pieces). One slot is required per genre. Note that new Shikibu-chan food truck operations are prohibited under the 2026 Revision Supplement (existing 3 locations continue under grandfather rights only).
Read Guideline §3 What happens to my derivative-work permission if I sell my NFT?
Once you transfer your NFT, you lose the right to use Shikibu-chan. As a rule, fan art, LINE stickers, merchandise, etc. created while holding the NFT can no longer be sold or published after the resale. However, the treatment of existing creations can be discussed individually.
Read Guideline §6 May I use derivative works for commercial purposes?
Yes — commercial use is permitted as long as you follow these guidelines. This is the defining feature of Shikibu World / CBA NFTs: holding the NFT is itself the grant of permission for commercial use. Compliance with display obligations (fanfic logo + certificate of authentication + clear "(unofficial)" labeling) and registration in the Official Directory are required.
Read the Guideline Is the "(unofficial)" label absolutely required?
Yes, it is mandatory. Under §13, in order to prevent visitors and purchasers from mistaking your activity for "Shikibu World official", you are required to display standard wording such as "Shikibu World Derivative Work Project (unofficial)" alongside the fanfic logo. Violations may result in a request to change the display method.
Read Guideline §13 Are AI-generated works OK?
✅ Permitted: Auxiliary AI (auto-coloring, translation, proofreading, etc.) used in support of original works created by the NFT holder where human creative contribution is at the core. ❌ Prohibited: Mass generation via machine learning models such as LoRA, generation by AI voice synthesis alone, operation as an AI VTuber, and mass machine-generated output where human creative contribution is small.
Read Guideline §9 Is the Guideline acknowledgment registration mandatory?
Holders engaging in commercial use must register. It takes about 2 minutes via a Google Form: enter the 8-item checklist, your name, and contact details. A Google login is required, and your verified email address is automatically recorded for identity verification. Records are managed by the operator and used as the basis for response when display-obligation violations or similar issues arise.
Go to Guideline acknowledgment Is registration in the Official Directory mandatory?
Yes, for ongoing commercial use. Continuous commercial use without registration may be treated as unauthorized use. Registration is free and takes about 1 minute via Google Form.
Go to Holder Projects Where can I download the fanfic logo and certificates of authentication?
From the "Official Asset Downloads" section on the Guideline page, you can download four asset sets: (1) the fanfic logo, (2) the 1-piece certificate of authentication, (3) the 50-piece certificate of authentication, and (4) food truck assets.
Go to Official Asset Downloads Can I issue derivative-work NFTs?
No. Under §12 of the 2026 Revision Supplement, the new issuance, listing, and sale of NFTs containing Shikibu-chan representations is fully prohibited. However, secondary trading of the original NFTs themselves (on OpenSea, etc.) remains permitted.
Read Guideline §12 Can I start a new Shikibu-chan food truck?
Unfortunately, under the 2026 Revision Supplement new food truck operations are prohibited. Existing 3 locations (Tokyo, Aichi, Osaka) are allowed to continue under grandfather rights, but new holders may not launch food trucks. The reasons are: (1) the food and beverage industry has separately heavy compliance obligations (Food Sanitation Act, public health permits, etc.) on top of license management; (2) the brand-damage risk to the character in the event of food poisoning or similar incidents is significant; (3) it is not realistically feasible for the operator to continuously audit hygiene management for individual holders; and (4) food trucks effectively resemble "character-centric businesses" (which are outside the scope of these guidelines). However, "supplementary or decorative use" — where existing restaurants incorporate Shikibu-chan into part of their menu — remains available under Route 1 / Route 2 (e.g., a ramen shop offering a derivative-work Shikibu-chan ramen as part of its menu). If you are considering a new food truck, please contact the BUSON STUDIO inquiry form to discuss individually.
Read Guideline §14 Where should I go to discuss commercial collaborations?
Individual holder activities: you can self-deploy in accordance with this Guideline (Route 1 / Route 2). Special cases outside the framework of this Guideline (large-scale deployment, character-centric businesses, etc.) should be discussed directly via the BUSON STUDIO inquiry form.
Go to Contact What is the Character DAO?
It is a Discord community operated by BUSON. It hosts interaction among Shikibu World / CBA holders, project consultations, and the latest announcements from the operator. Holders of 50+ pieces can launch dedicated project channels.
What happens if I violate the rules?
Under §5 (Prohibitions) or §7, possible responses include: (1) individual contact to request changes to the display method; (2) suspension of use or injunction requests; (3) application of the revised Guideline; and (4) in cases involving anti-social forces or similar, contract termination, damages claims, etc.
Read Guideline §5The 2026 Revision Supplement is under review
The Guideline and Terms of Service consist of the originals drafted by attorneys in 2022 / 2024, plus the 2026 Revision Supplement (AI clauses, 2 routes, display obligations, etc.). The supplement is a draft prior to legal review; the official effective date will be announced separately.
